What a ripper of a spot Cameron Corner is! Not a whole lot to do, but it’s as scenic as a roo in a raincoat! It’s quiet, relaxing, and you can get completely shit faced at the pub for about double what you’d normally pay. I loved every minute of my overnighter at the Corner.
Well… seems I was the only galah there at that time of year – late December. They get maybe one or two other nutters a night during that stretch, until the big bash – New Year’s Eve. I don’t mind a bit of heat, so it suited me just fine.
If you’re keen to ring in the New Year three times in one go, yep, you heard right, three times, then Cameron’s Corner is your spot. Thanks to daylight saving, you kick off the festivities in New South Wales, then hop over the border to South Australia for round two, and finally, another leap into Queensland. It’s like doing a jig around the corner post.
The drive in from the NSW side is a breeze. Smooth, well-maintained road, easy at 90kph even with the camper tagging along.
But the Queensland side, that’s another kettle of fish. The road’s fine – well graded and all – but that’s not the worry. The drama is that the Queensland approach is chockers with water culverts. With even a drop of rain, these turn into boggy traps and makeshift water crossings. Coming in from NSW, it was a one-hand-on-the-wheel job, snapping pics along the way. But leaving via Queensland? Mate, it was a two-hands-gripped-tight, white-knuckle ride. Nearly sent the camper flying a few times! All those bumps and humps that can launch you sky-high on dirt roads, and hardly any time to hit the brakes.
The camper was spick and span, brand new. And this is what it looked like after just a bit of rain overnight, trying to get out of the Corner on the Queensland side. If I’d planned a longer stay, I’d have bolted, especially with a big downpour on the horizon. Getting out after that would’ve been a proper ordeal.
Here’s hoping they had a cracker NYE for 23/24!
